[SOLVED] Re: mythbackend runs but not listening?

Thank you! That was the problem. Apparently nowadays there's no longer a "skip-networking" in /etc/mysql/my.cnf - so I just added my host's IP address after the bind-address for localhost:

[SOLVED] mythbackend runs but not listening?

I've got a strange one. After some updates, I'm in a state where it looks like mythbackend runs, but it isn't listening on 6543. Because of this, I get a black screen when my frontend starts up. (I'm...
  3. Re: Can't skip ahead / jump ahead after transcoding?

It's been a while, but I finally got around to testing this. Here's a progress report of sorts.

Doing a transcode with --buildindex didn't seem to work for me. I was able to run mythtranscode on...
  4. Can't skip ahead / jump ahead after transcoding?

I recently decided to try transcoding some of the shows I'm recording to save on disk space. It looks like the transcode works fine, but I'm running into a strange problem with the shows that have...
  5. [ubuntu] Re: software installation when root has different user name

Sometimes root got renamed on Internet-facing Unix boxes to reduce the probability of a successful attack. (This used to be done more than it is now - nowadays you just reject root logins that come...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: software installation when root has different user name

I've never done it before, but you might want to look into the runaspw and runas_default options for /etc/sudoers.

You might also be able to just su rather than sudo.
  7. Re: polkit / Dbus, I'm confused. Which is correct for granting root access?

You haven't said what your app is written in. If it's C/C++, then setuid/seteuid (or setgid/setegid) is what you should be using:

Re: Problem with -classpath option in java

Your classpath will need to include both the jar file and the directory that contains MyProgram (assuming it's in the default package). For example:

    java -cp foo.jar:. MyProgram

    More info than...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Anybody want to take a guess at why I can resolve DNS names but cannot ping them?

The only thing I can think might be a possibility is that your /etc/resolv.conf doesn't have the right nameserver line? If that's the case, not sure how dig is finding it though...
  10. Re: Frequent frontend lockups on 0.25 / 10.04 LTS

No crashes in two weeks with MythWeather removed.
  11. Re: Frequent frontend lockups on 0.25 / 10.04 LTS

Disabling the NWS alerts helped somewhat, but I still get crashes in weatherSource.cpp. So now I'm removing all of MythWeather (shame) to see if that helps.
  12. Re: Frequent frontend lockups since upgrade to Precise/0.25

I've run into similar symptoms with 0.25 on 10.04 LTS. The thread for that is

  13. Frequent frontend lockups on 0.25 / 10.04 LTS

I see someone else has a thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1971260) on frequent frontend lockups on 0.25 with Precise. But I'm using 10.04 LTS and see something similar: at random...

Cygwin lets you build MS Windows apps - here's a link explaining how:

It might be easier just to create a shortcut to your app. Then...

  17. [ubuntu] Re: corrupt .odt open office document recovery?

An .odt file is just a .zip file with a different name. You might be able to find a zip utility that will fix it (although zip -FF probably won't work) - if you can, you could extract the...

[ubuntu] Re: equivalent of nice command for RAM usage

You can set the maximum amount of RAM a program uses with the ulimit shell built-in command.

I'm not sure if Ubuntu honors ulimit -m, but you might want to try:

    ulimit -m 256

    to give the...

Not sure if this is the same problem. If LIRC dies after rebooting but can be restarted with the init script, try something like this:

[ubuntu] Re: Problem using LCD TV as a monitor

    Re: Weird .class error?

    The official syntax would be:

    java packagename.Classname

(note the . instead of /). Make sure you're in the parent of packagename, and your class has the package packagename.

Here's a link that might help:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-642148.html

Essentially, you'll need to change the default uid / gid on the NAS, not something you can do in Ubuntu.
