  1. [ubuntu] Re: easier way to combine multiple pdf's?

    Hi.

What you need to do with the PDF thingy is download not the Windows installer but the zip archive with just the java stuff inside. Unzip it on your desktop.

Then, if you run "java -jar...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Could not save the file /etc/syslog.conf.

Just put "sudo" before the command (or gksudo for graphical apps).

For example, you could edit the file with "sudo nano" or "gksudo gedit".

A cool way of seeing how much space you have and what is occupying it is to install "filelight" and use it to view things graphically.

    [ubuntu] Re: tar.bz2

The problem with that is that "ex" is already a command (a synonym for "vim" by default).

It would be best to choose another name for the function.

[ubuntu] Re: GTalk on Pidgin Not working

    Hmm, strange.

I successfully added my Google Talk account. However, it does now show up as XMPP rather than "Google Talk" or "Gtalk". I left the default port.

As far as I know, that is not possible without major hacking. Two sound cards might be required.

Have you heard of someone achieving that?

[all variants] Re: Samba re-installation problems

It seems to be complaining that "/etc/samba/smb.conf" does not exist. It is expecting it to be there, and is choking on that. Silly, I know.

Here is a hack that might work.

    Go to the terminal...

I have no experience of Brasero myself, so I can only suggest that you try out K3B, available in the repositories.

[xubuntu] Re: how to input chinese in opera9.5?

I think that the problem is that you have set up SCIM to work with Gtk apps (such as those that come with GNOME) only, but Opera is a Qt app (such as those that come with KDE).

    Go back to the...

[ubuntu] Re: Wheres The 2nd Disk?

Thanks, that's the sort of info I was after.

So, you only have one actual hard drive as such, but it is divided into two partitions.

Well, as far as we can see from those commands, you do have...

    [ubuntu] Re: Error code

Sorry on behalf of Ubuntu! Error messages can be unhelpful at times. They assume you are experienced.

What it means is that you ought to enter that command at a terminal. You can find the...

99.9%? That must be infuriating! I hope we can solve your problem.

By the way, an admin should probably move this to the Wubi forum, where people have more specialised knowledge.

  14. [xubuntu] Re: error occured when updating packages - now cannot boot up xubuntu at all

Ah, it's as I expected. The EeePC runs on Xandros by default, and people giving advice for it assume that you are running Xandros. If you have Ubuntu and follow the same advice, it may cause...

Yeah, but the command line is easiest.

Let's say you want to back up everything in /home/shakujou to /media/external.

    Do this:

    tar -vcf /media/external/shakujou-backup.tar /home/shakujou/...

[all variants] Re: writing on ntfs formatted harddrive

OK. The drive is mounted as root, so you have to be root to transfer files to it.

Also make sure that you mount it as "ntfs-3g" and not just "ntfs".

So, use "sudo mv" instead of just "mv". Or...
