I've seen people using Nevernote/Evernote and Freemind for scientific purposes, however I never used any of these myself, so I can't provide any directions - sorry about that.
I follow roughly the...
+1 to LaTeX for writing the actual dissertation/paper - although a little clunky at first, it beats any office suite hands down :)
If you want to use BibTeX for your bibliography (which I...
Glad to hear that!
Before marking the thread as solved, it might be worth to investigate this issue a little more to offer a crisp solution to anybody else with the same problem: let's try and see...
What if you use apt-get instead?
Try and type this into the terminal:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre
It looks like all of the packages you need come from Ubuntu repositories, so there is no need to install them manually. You should be able to install them and all the needed dependencies directly...
Happy to be of help! :)
There is indeed a good possibility that something is left back; I find the following link to be really helpful in this regard:

I have the feeling that copying your whole installation to the new system could not be that easy: sometimes, I had problems with as little as one single component upgrade.
If you could just backup...
Installing KDE on top of Ubuntu is usually a safe procedure; the only big drawback is that you will find several redundant applications in your menu, since both KDE and GNOME come with a large array...

This should make some space available - potentially up to a few GB, depending on how many updates...
make is trying to install into /usr/local/bin and failing, which suggests that you are not running it with root privileges (users don't usually have write access to this directory).
Try and run it...

If you have IcedTea installed, you can try and uninstall...
Great! Glad to be of help :)
Happy to read that things are working for you!
Sorry for the late reply, I just noticed it.
I use as default the main US server myself, and never had a problem with it - as far as I can tell,...
I just realized that you could step into a bigger problem here: since you have to actually install the guest system on a virtual HD, it could be impossible to install it while running a LiveCD, since...
If you want to try something lighter, XFCE or LXDE might be even better for you.
XFCE is rather similar to GNOME, and you can obtain it by installing the xubuntu-desktop package. LXDE is featured...
Apologies, I somehow missed the part where you say that you don't have an available backup medium.
Have you considered using an online backup solution? For instance, if you don't have a huge amount...
Hi and welcome to Ubuntu! :)
You can upgrade to 10.10 via Software Updates: go to System -> Administration -> Software Updates and you will find an active button saying "New Release Avaliable" or...
I found that XP runs nicely under VirtualBox with just 256 MB RAM and only 1 MB video memory. If you have something more to spare, you can increase RAM to 512 and video memory to 16 or even to 64 MB....
In this case, I would suggest to just start and play around in Ubuntu to test the various packages available and figure out what you want to do and what you will need. Of course, the forums and the...
I have been using the same tweaks myself without noticing any significant issue on several platforms.
However, if you happen to load a lot of tabs together (about 10 or more), you might experience a...
I have tested several versions of KDE under Ubuntu, both in VMs and on real machines, and I personally found the KDE available by default in Lucid (version 4.4.2) the first to be really free from...
Welcome back to Linux!
The list of applications you need will depend on what you plan to do with your computer; Ubuntu already comes with a number of general purpose applications ready for use:...
