Sticky: [ubuntu] Re: Meltdown and Spectre Discussion Sticky

    Hi 1fallen,

I believe that the section of the report you are pointing to refers only to the CPU's native unmitigated vulnerabilities. The new kernel actually mitigates some of these. The operative...

Sticky: [ubuntu] Re: Meltdown and Spectre Discussion Sticky

Kernel 4.13.0-36-generic available as a regular update this morning. These are my results:

    duckhook@Zeus:~/bin$ sudo ./spectre-meltdown-checker.sh
    [sudo] password for duckhook:

    @linuxyogi,

Patience is a necessary virtue at this time. I am not covered either, nor is practically anyone else:
    duckhook@Zeus:~/bin$ sudo ./spectre-meltdown-checker.sh
    Spectre and Meltdown...

    Intel again.

Does Intel truly not understand that their namby pamby approach to a really serious problem will come back to haunt them?

Throughout corporate history, from the Tylenol poisoning...

Sticky: [ubuntu] Re: Meltdown and Spectre Discussion Sticky

The real problem with the Spectre vulnerability in particular is that it is very subtle and low level, so is extremely difficult to mitigate. It's not simply patching a hole like it is with most...

To anyone following this thread, don't be fooled by 1fallen''s self-effacing reply. He is the furthest thing from a general user. While I strongly caution general users against installing stuff that...

By patiently waiting until the patched kernel is properly tested and then rolled out in due time. Microcode is already present and is automatically downloaded and updated in most versions and...

Sticky: [ubuntu] Re: Meltdown and Spectre Discussion Sticky

Of course there are problems. That is normal. That's also the point in having a testing process. Newer kernels must be tested and debugged thoroughly. This takes time. The fact that it is in proposed...

You are in good shape. You already have the latest mainline kernel with the fix for Meltdown. No need for further info.

    Good Luck and Happy Ubuntu-ing!

    Sticky: [ubuntu] Re: meltdown-spectre

I do not recommend adding PPAs unless you are a very knowledgeable user who knows what the risks are and can recover from bad updates easily.

I'm confused by your post. Are you running 4.13.0-26...

You appear to have "proposed" activated. Incompatibilities are only to be expected with proposed. Unfortunately, turning it off at this point is also problematic. It probably dragged in tons of...

    Just rebooted and ran spectre-meltdown-checker.sh

Rats. I have a Sandy-bridge, so microcode can't be applied in my case. Will have to rely entirely on future kernel patches, unless Intel releases...

Hi Frogs Hair. When did you receive your microcode update? I have the driver installed, but don't remember receiving an update. Did you install manually? Also, I'm not sure that a microcode update...

One of the biggest problems with both of these side channel attacks is that they can theoretically bypass VM protection and peer into adjacent VMs (even the kernel, which is really serious)....

No, unfortunately, you are not. You are running 32-bit Linux. Ubuntu has not patched that yet. No word on when they will either. See post #118 above.

    See post #97 above.

Sticky: [ubuntu] Re: Meltdown and Spectre Discussion Sticky

    Yes. Correct.

Careful about installing forward kernels. It tends to break things. Not always, but frequently enough to need care. Of course, if you are testing, then by all means go ahead.

No patches for 32-bit yet. No further word either, that I am aware of.

I also have 32-bit machines. They are not exposed to the internet and I don't run anything other than really basic, proven...

Why are you on Bionic? It is in beta—i.e. for testers and other bleeding edge types. Of course it's problematic.

At the risk of repetitiveness, an easy way to see if the patch has been applied is as per deadflowr's post 68. An easier version of that command is:
lscpuYou can look for the pti flag by filtering...
