  1. [ubuntu] Re: Failed to probe capabilities for /usr/local/bin/qemu-system-x86_64: internal erro

    I'm on ubuntu server:

    $ lsb_release -d
    Description: Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
    NOT Debian.

    $ id
    uid=1000(thefu) gid=1000(thefu)...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: chmod to give a remote server read priveleges to a client home directory

    ssh key-based authentication is not just more secure. It is more convenient. I don't understand why everyone doesn't just use keys instead of passwords. Makes no sense to me. Being prompted once per...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Failed to probe capabilities for /usr/local/bin/qemu-system-x86_64: internal erro

    I like to keep it simple:

    $ kvm-ok
    INFO: /dev/kvm exists
    KVM acceleration can be used

    Whatever is pointing at /usr/local/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 was probably installed outside the package...
  4. Re: What are advantages to using docker for wordpress in ubuntu?

    Containers aren't the same as virtualization. They are very, very, different.

    [ubuntu] Re: I did something wrong with 20.04]

    300 emails isn't a DoS attack. 30,000 wouldn't be a DoS attack, unless you are on a 2400 baud modem.

    Probably want to open a new thread for these questions, since they aren't related to fsck.
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Should backup drives be password protected (LUKS) & can you protect an existing d

    Yes, having data on encrypted storage is a "good practice." Just be 100% certain you have at least 3 copies of the data on different physical storage.

    Encryption only helps with protection when...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: chmod to give a remote server read priveleges to a client home directory

    chmod works on the local machine or over NFS mounts. There is no remote version of the command.
    If you ssh into the remote system, the chmod commands are "local" to that remote system.

    Re: My password list is empty

    Doesn't that seem like a really, really, bad idea?

    Browsers are some of the most complex and bug-filled software that we use daily. How much effort do you think the programming team for a browser...
  9. Re: Hard drive S.M.A.R.T. reports disk nearing failure ... but

    All storage fails. We just want it to fail AFTER we are done using it. SMART is telling you that the drive isn't safe to use. Of course, you are free to ignore those warnings and may or may not...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Bad Sectors - CAN NOT save the data on the HDD

    Has the OP posted the system logs showing problems? The last 3 weeks or so, my 18.04 VM host has had some stability issues. I've narrowed it down to either the kernel line (not just 1 kernel) or...

    Nothing funny in that output.
  12. [ubuntu] Re: Bad Sectors - CAN NOT save the data on the HDD

    I've had spinrite for decades. It violates all sorts of "do no harm" requirements that data recovery experts follow. It is also limited to 2TB, since it doesn't do GPT.

    It has been about 15 yrs...

    [ubuntu] Re: Blank update!?

    Run

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt upgrade

    Any errors? Might be useful to throw the output to a log file and review the logs. That would be :

    sudo apt update |tee /tmp/log.update
    sudo apt...

    [ubuntu] Re: I did something wrong with 20.04]

    For disks, there are lots of tools.
    smartctl, fdisk, badblocks are the main ones. Avoid GUIs. They lie. They often oversimplify way too much and provide misleading output.

    [SOLVED] Re: Sudden outage

    A PSU is almost always an internal component to a computer. We aren't talking about a different wall plug, though that would be worth testing too.

    I had a wall plug in the garage die a few weeks...
  18. Re: Can Ubuntu be installed on a MediaTek MT8183 Chromebook

    Again, my data could be out of date, but my Core i5 8th gen gets 8 hrs of battery, which is a little less than my 2015 Core i3 chromebook.
    Neither has ever left me without power in the middle of a...
  19. Re: 4G-stick Huawei E3372: internet connection via command line?

    I have doubts that those tools I listed will be useful.

    If the modem connection is just a cell data connection, perhaps using the ppp connection technique could work, but I've not used that in...

  22. Re: 4G-stick Huawei E3372: internet connection via command line?

    Normal networking can be controlled using wicd-cli or nm-cli if you don't want to setup a netplan YAML file.

  23. [ubuntu] Re: No USB Drive, need to install Ubuntu (HELP)
