Are you using 3D acceleration, it could be lagging because of that. Or Guest Additions may help.

That laptop is probably 32 bit. Ubuntu dropped 32 bit since 18.04. You could try your luck copying Debian testing 32 bit libraries, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I think snap is kind of clunky sometimes. But, I got Discord using snaps.

I first learned this trick in Debian. I was in a hot mess with dependencies with dpkg -i instead of sudo apt install ./package.deb.
