I actually started down that path, lol. I found a guide while out, on my iPhone, then when I got home to do it, I couldn't find the guide as I forgot the keywords I used in the search. All I...
I must have missed this, and the other comment about Etcher, I don't get any notifications so I just go into the thread and try to pick up where I left off.
Anyways, you're the best, CatKiller,...

Rufus was an exe file. Etcher for the win. ISO file to boot-able USB stick in less than 5 minutes, an the Lubuntu 18.04.5 booted right up on the Compaq Presario CQ50.

Any idea why the ISO file doesn't "just work". I started into this thinking I could put the ISO file onto a USB stick, then just "plug and play".
Was I wrong, and just missed the part where...
USB boot attempt has been at a black screen with a blinking underscore cursor now for 20+ minutes, I suspect the boot-able USB is wrong again.
I got Ubuntu 20.04 onto the laptop using Rufus.exe...

Well, just realized the laptop's wifi wasn't working, not sure if it's the JB weld, or I crossed the wires when putting the wifi card back in... between that, and realizing (inxi) wouldn't install...
No, I tried installing (inxi) from Ubuntu 20.04, currently installed on the laptop still, it has internet connection. I did not try to install (inxi) while running Lubuntu/while trying to install...
Edit: With USB stick not plugged in.

You are correct, title should say "Lubuntu", not Ubuntu. I am trying to install Lubuntu. And I am not sure what "live" means, I did get to a point of setting up the OS configuration, stuff like...
I have been made aware of what a 1 core cpu is like, lol. Trying to figure out boot loading from a old Batman USB drive I found behind the refrigerator when we moved into the trailer 8 years ago,...
The compaq presario cq50 has 2GB, but 4GB "virtual", whatever that means, I assume it's marketing mostly, and just has ~4GB RAM, or maybe it uses 2 GB from the Hard Drive or something, idk. The...
Thanks for all the replies here : )
This has me curious, lol. Thank you. I'm looking for a GUI version for a computer illiterate type that will be using a laptop from likely 10+ years ago,...
This is strange, it wakes up via my USB Logitech k120 keyboard by hitting any key, but does NOT wake with the PS/2 HP brand keyboard. I wonder if the bios/motherboard/whatever uefi settings are, are...
Best I could figure out was it's likely a driver issue. I tried pressing every key on the keyboard to wake the machine up. I have an old dusty, dirty, nicotine coated Gigabit Z77 motherboard from...
Currently on Ubuntu 20.04, but I just downloaded VM software and am looking forward to trying out other distros. I can't believe there are some that have such low system requirements, I'm so used to...

Oof, I opened the can of worms, lol.
I didn't realize the differences between Linux versions was more than just "distro".
I guess each distro has multiple desktop environments I can choose...
I have a desktop from 2012, and a laptop from 2008. I'm looking at some lightweight Linux, maybe Peppermint, Stax, Q4OS, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, or something, for the Laptop.
But now, I'm wondering if...
