Try Kubuntu, it's a good alternative if you like Kde more than Unity.
My netbook is a Acer Aspire One from 2008 with pretty mediocre spec (Atom 1.60ghz, 1 gb ram). It was painfully slow with Windows 7 so I decided to replace it with the latest Ubuntu 13.04 daily build....

Transmission, Ubuntu Tweak, Libreoffice, Clementine and Lightread.
Qt is superior to GTK.
Unity is awesome!
If you want a stock Gnome desktop built on Ubuntu you can try the Ubuntu Gnome Remix:

On my laptop the 12.04 release is snappier than 12.10, maybe you could try the LTS release?

It has to do with chromes Pepper Flash Plugin, this is a known bug.
1. Install latest flash player 11.2 from software center.
2. Open Chrome and type chrome://plugins in your address bar.
