  1. I did something stupid/ partial data recovery?

A disk in a Raid 1 volume went bad. I attempted to copy/diskimage from the good drive to a new empty drive. I inadvertently started copying the empty drive to the good drive, realized my error and...
  2. [server] Inconsistent behavior between samba and Win7, Win10, and Win11 clients

I am running Kubuntu 22.04 and samba. I have three Windows clients: a virtual Win7 running on the server, an old laptop running Win10, and my wife's newer laptop running Win11.

    The Win10 machine...
  3. [server] Re: Registry setting for Samba in Win10?

Thank you for your advice. I tried using the original smb.conf, modified a little bit, and now the new laptop CAN access the ubuntu shares! I did discover, however, that, while the older Win10 laptop...
  4. [server] Re: Registry setting for Samba in Win10?

    To summarize:

    1) Two desktops, one virtual Win7, and an older Win10 laptop are all able to connect shares with each other.
    2) The new laptop detects all the other machines but cannot connect to...
  5. [server] Re: Registry setting for Samba in Win10?

I did check out the link you provided. I think I already came across it before. Anyway, doing a "find" on the working laptop registry failed to bring up the keys mentioned in the link.
  6. [server] Re: Registry setting for Samba in Win10?

Thanks for your reply! I fixed the problem with the "Max protocol NT1 is less than min protocol SMB3." I thought (and tried) to compare the two registries, but they are too large and different enough...
  7. [server] Registry setting for Samba in Win10?

I have 2 Win10 Home laptops and 2 Kubuntu desktop/server PC's (20.04 and 18.04.) The older Win10 laptop is able to connect to samba shares on both PC's. Sometime in the past, I had to muck around...

Re: VLC only works from command line

Uninstalling snap, apparmor, and chromium fixed the problem with the chromium browser not working. However, the vlc issue is still active. Also, vlc does not run when invoked from the KDE start menu.

Re: VLC only works from command line

OK, so now I've discovered that the chromium browser will no longer work at all. From the command line, I get:

VLC only works from command line

Performed fresh install of Kubuntu 20.04. When I right-click on a video to play with vlc, vlc crashes/doesn't play. If I invoke vlc from the command line, it does work and will play a selected file....
  11. Clone SSD Win10 partition still boots old HDD partition

I installed a larger SSD to replace the smaller Win10 HDD partition on my dual boot Kubuntu system. I used GParted to clone the Win10 HDD partition to the SSD. I ran grub-update and both OS's were...
  12. Re: 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) Known bugs and work-arounds

After trying various settings and still not being able to connect to Samba shares, I discovered the following settings also had to be included in smb.conf

    lanman auth = yes
    ntlm auth = yes
  13. [server] Re: firestarter/DHCP server broken on upgrade from 12.04LTS to 13.10

Thanks, I did discover that firestarter had been discontinued. I installed gufw and realized I had to start from scratch, meaning learning a new program and re-entering all my rules. Is there a way...
  14. [server] firestarter/DHCP server broken on upgrade from 12.04LTS to 13.10

I had a home server running 12.04LTS Kubuntu. (I like having a desktop environment for the server.) The server provides DHCP and firewall services for my home network. I have used firestarter to do...

Re: Skype, 12.10, and dependency hell

Making progress. Some libraries, eg. libQtWebkit and the gstreamer group, fail to install using anything based on apt into the /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ directory. (Instead, I was asked to remove my...

    Skype, 12.10, and dependency hell

Recently upgraded from 12.04 64b to 12.10 64b. Skype used to work fine. Now, it was not part of the upgrade and synaptic only shows a "skype" package that requires "skype-bin" which is non-existent....
  20. [kubuntu] Re: Could not calculate the upgrade (to 12.04)

SOLVED: I found a bunch of HELD packages when I examined the proper log file. When I removed the last one listed (something I did not recognize) I was suddenly able to complete the upgrade.

  23. [kubuntu] Solved: Failed upgrade from Kubuntu 8.04 to 9.10

Booting with Knoppix "failsafe" did the trick! I was able to see that grub's menu.lst had only two entries, even though the new 9.10 kernel had been installed. Once I manually added (edited) the 9.10...
  24. [kubuntu] Re: Failed upgrade from Kubuntu 8.04 to 9.10

Apparently, Kubuntu 8.04 LTS does not upgrade to 10.04 LTS in one step. (Ubuntu does.) Hence the problem.

The fact that this DL380 G3 has a hardware RAID also seems to be giving me problems when...
  25. [kubuntu] Failed upgrade from Kubuntu 8.04 to 9.10
