I solved this problem by removing line
application/octet-stream=gedit.desktop;
from
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

You can read my previous posts about MT on 2nd-gen - #962 and #963. I use GINN and UTouch.
Multi-touch gestures work (i.e. rotate and zoom in eog).
Better GINN gestures script is needed.

You can reboot, for example and run sudo modprobe hid_multitouch after reboot. May be geistest detect touchscreen after that...
You can load it manually with command
sudo modprobe hid_multitouch
and check that it was loaded with
lsmod | grep hid
Do you have file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-touchscreen-egalax.rules...
You can still try uTouch+GINN if you install original xserver-xorg-input-evdev package. For me it does not work with Plippo's one.
