  1. Re: Why does my data transfer speed start fast then taper down?

I'm sorry, but you've lost me. Try rephrasing the whole issue so it's understandable.
  2. Re: Why does my data transfer speed start fast then taper down?

    "External DVD drive"?
Of course it's slow. It needs to burn a DVD, this takes some time. The fast burst you see at the beginning is the RAM buffers filling up, then it's down to DVD write speed.
  3. Re: Why does my data transfer speed start fast then taper down?

Well, the interesting information would be your laptop HDD, your external HDD and the interface to it. USB2 can be many things.
  4. Re: Why does my data transfer speed start fast then taper down?

A detailed description of your hardware might help.
  5. [lubuntu] Re: Login Manager crashes when trying to open tiling window manager session

As a Lubuntu user for the last two years, my best advice is: don't.

Stay with the Lubuntu session manager when logging in.

    Written based on painful experiences.

    Re: What's it Worth?

    +1 to @TheFu.

    I could add:
    * no planned obsolescence, making older HW useless
    * no automatic bundling of 3rd-rate, lousy applications as default (horoscopes etc.)
    * installation takes 30...50...
  7. Re: Could I install Ubuntu on a 8gb SD card and install the apps on an external hard

Nice idea, but I doubt that it will work. There are so many configurations, drivers and hardware dependencies that you'd need a 100% clone of your "dinosaur laptop", and then I fail to see the gain.
  8. [lubuntu] Re: How do I make Tooltips work on the desktop? 20.04/LXQt

OK, no solution found. It seems to be a bug, on searching I've found references to the issue elsewhere.

I can live with it, but it's a shame when presenting Lubuntu to new users.
  9. [lubuntu] Re: How do I make Tooltips work on the desktop? 20.04/LXQt

    Thanks, westie457.
That's a step in the right direction, but unfortunately doesn't help for LXQt. Gnome configurations don't really fly, but it gives a hint on where to search.
  10. [lubuntu] Re: How do I make Tooltips work on the desktop? 20.04/LXQt

    I know all about renaming.
I'm talking about the mouseover tooltips that display a descriptive text about the application.
This works in the Application Menu and the Panel, but not on the Desktop....
  11. [lubuntu] How do I make Tooltips work on the desktop? 20.04/LXQt

I am not able to get Tooltips (mouse-over-icon) to work on the desktop.

It works in the Application Menu, eg, placing the mouse pointer over FeatherPad, a little pop-up saying "Text Editor"...
  12. [ubuntu] Re: Please help with Ubuntu installation from USB drive to hard drive

Not to the point, but: how on earth did you get Win10 onto that machine? And do you take a nap after starting it and when you wake up is it running?

Jokes aside: I run several HP laptops of that...

  14. [ubuntu] Re: Slow write speed when backing up internal HDD to external USB3.0 HDD

CharlesA did the only right thing: ran the numbers.

    I get approximately the same from 750 x 10^9 / [ 2.5 x 60 x 60 ], in my case ~83 MB/s.

The discrepancy is probably due to GB vs. GiB and of...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Slow write speed when backing up internal HDD to external USB3.0 HDD

AFAIK, FAT or exFAT only allow user space operations, which is suboptimal for UNIX/Linux.

You'd probably be better off with NTFS.
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Slow write speed when backing up internal HDD to external USB3.0 HDD

Why are you copying ext4 to exFAT? Sounds like a bad idea to me.

  19. Re: Lubuntu 20.04 installation problem with hp compaq 6715s

I'm getting a bit fed up with this kind of knee-jerk dissing of old hardware. The DVD is 24x and a live boot takes 4...5 min.

I'm running a couple of HP Compaq 6910p laptops that are very similar...

I always thought that that's what Alt+Tab is supposed to do. Am I missing something here?
  21. Re: Lubuntu 20.04 installation problem with hp compaq 6715s

Live boot from a DVD takes around 4...5 minutes. I don't know if that's what you mean by "slow".
Don't just select language, but also keyboard layout (F3) during live boot.
I see no reason to use...
  22. Re: keyboard layout screwed up when installing Ubuntu plus partitioned disk wrong way

Best option: redo from start. Honestly. Been there, done that (many times).

    [SOLVED] Re: Audio connector problem

Unlikely. It's more likely that your two wires are actually two coax cables. This is common practice.
