  1. [SOLVED] Re: Full disk encryption--an explanation of exactly how does it work from the user's

I've used this guide to set up one of my boxes with full disk encryption of the OS drive. My /boot is running of a 32GB USB stick. You can make it so /boot is on it's own partition, but it...
  2. [legacy Windows] Re: How does one build a Windows NT 6.0 Repair/Recovery flash chip in LinUX?

This is a pretty stupid question, but why do you need to update the bios on this machine? Where did you download this bios update from?
  3. Re: Samba permissions vs. Linux Permissions

Yes, it will work that way. file-level permissions will override shared level permissions.

However, you should still assign share level permissions for the rare event the file level permissions...

    Re: PciE Network Card

That's got an Intel chipset. Just make sure you have a PCIe x4 slot available on your motherboard. It will fit in a x16 slot, but those are usually for video cards.
  5. [SOLVED] Re: Full disk encryption--an explanation of exactly how does it work from the user's

What are you going on about? You can do an encrypted root from the setup GUI if you really want to.

If you want to do it automatically, you just need to select the "Advanced features" button under...

    Re: PciE Network Card

    Just vouching for this.

I've a dual port 1 Gb-E card that is running the Intel Pro/1000 chipset. It's branded IBM, but it's made by them with the Intel chipset.

You can find one like it here:...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Slow write speed when backing up internal HDD to external USB3.0 HDD

I don't have a good way for you to make files accessible via Windows and Mac unless you run rsync on an NTFS or exfat drive.

I have been backing up and restoring files to a Linux box and sharing...

[ubuntu] Re: A suspicious files found

I was expecting a PDF or something to be attached to the email since they said it was a receipt of some sort.

The part I don't understand is where this "fingerprints" folder came from since you...

[ubuntu] Re: A suspicious files found

Did you download or execute the attached file? Seems kind of odd that those files would exist.

Did it come in a zip file or as a shell files or something else?

When you were working with it,...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Slow write speed when backing up internal HDD to external USB3.0 HDD

I can't answer your other questions as all my drives are connected via SAS -> SATA cables. I don't have any experience with the eSATA-PM cables or interface that TheFu is referring to.

    However, I...

It might be due to the new hardening that was done after the forum upgrade. Are you still having issue with posting?

  13. [ubuntu] Re: Slow write speed when backing up internal HDD to external USB3.0 HDD

You didn't mention what configuration the four disks in your server are set up in. Are you running JBOD (no redundancy), or some form of RAID (so if a disk fails, you can still access your data until...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Slow write speed when backing up internal HDD to external USB3.0 HDD

The benchmark looks OK to me. Please note that file sizes can kill transfer speeds.

I also have a feeling that drive might be one that uses Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), which WD uses are the...

That has happened off and on in the past. Most of the time, you can save your post content and then try again in a little bit and it'll post OK.

  18. [SOLVED] Re: Unable to access tplink router configuration page 192.168.0.1

    Any logs on the router?

The OS you are connecting from shouldn't affect connectivity.

If you want to try the 'nuke it from orbit' approach, install nmap and do a port scan against the router's...
  19. [SOLVED] Re: Unable to access tplink router configuration page 192.168.0.1

Take the | head -n 1 out and see if it is returning any errors. If it is not, try running this command and see what it shows:

  21. [SOLVED] Re: Unable to access tplink router configuration page 192.168.0.1

What message did you get when you tried curl? Can you post the output of the terminal?

You can select it with the mouse and then right click to copy IIRC.
  22. [SOLVED] Re: Unable to access tplink router configuration page 192.168.0.1

Have you tried connecting over regular http? I've seen some routers that don't support HTTPS out of the box.

If ping is working, but you are unable to access the web GUI, you can try running curl...

    That's good news at least.

If you haven't tried this yet.. it might work, but you still need to do a clean install of a supported 64-bit version of Ubuntu.

  25. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 32bits crossgrading to 64bit failed (unusrpisingly) need suggestions

I can't really think of a good way to do it tbh. You can get a list of the installed packages and install them on the new install, but that means you'll need to copy the configuration files/databases...
