I cant recall if grub-install does an automatic update-grub. I would try
sudo update-grub
between step 3 and 4. At least it will show the OS's it discovered.

You may still need map the incoming Windows user user1 to Linux user user1. Have you done that?
Gparted in the standard repository is out-of-date. You need to download the latest ISO and burn a CD. I used gparted-live-0.12.1-1. There is a new tick box for the MB allignment.
I forgot to mention you can also try removing software "dmraid" using Syaptic after booting from the live cd and before installing grub.
