Re: Your worst experience of pain

My worst pain ever... kidney stone. Definitely.

I hear from a few reliable sources that pain is often worse than childbirth in some cases. Is that true?

    Non-physical...

    I'd say using Linux...

    Re: This makes me MAD!

Well, Windows has a disappointing GUI, too.

But I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE X and it's capabilities, all the choice and capability of the DEs and WMs.

Compiz Fusion is just teh icing on...

    Re: This makes me MAD!

I think that's a thing for all users of distribution families. I'm sure Mac OS X people get riled up at Linux distributions for Compiz Fusion. Heck I'm sure there's still a lot of Apple fans who are...

    Re: What Happened To WinTel?

I thought it was because Microsoft was telling OEMs to put those stickers on clearly-not-ready PCs.

Re: What do you do when bored?

    I use StumbleUpon.

And I riff against Windows sites that are all about trying to get functionality that I could get with any Linux distribution.

    I play Wii.

    I listen to music.

    I program.

No, I'm not anymore. I'm just saying maybe they aren't like Microsoft. Sorry if I made it sound like I was trying to pass them off as such.

    Re: This makes me MAD!

I stand corrected. They're in the good category of copying then.

Microsoft still tries to pass everything they sell as their own invention.

Re: What can Windows do that Linux can't?

I use Arch now. I have all repositories already before I even install my distribution. And to enable all that I just type the command I issued before but also libdvdcss3 with one command. All done.

Re: What can Windows do that Linux can't?

Is sudo apt-get install gstreamer* too hard? I didn't even have to put in a disk to do that.

Of course, I use Arch now, so my command actually changed to pacman -S codecs gstreamer0.10-bad...

    Re: This makes me MAD!

Except sadly, a 3D desktop is not a Linux innovation.

I'll definitely go out on a limb and say Compiz Fusion sure as hell perfected it!

It's how the handle the creation of the software: The...

Well, that cleared out the IO problem, I guess. But the ATA problem remains:

I read that first link given by albinootje... and the frightening thing is... I *am* using a GeForce 8600GT now. It could be its sending interrupts to the wrong thing.

So maybe I should try fixing...

Update. I can't seem to save to this partition anymore, I get I/O errors. It crashed Pidgin. Output of pidgin debug and the new dmesg output follows.

  14. [other] Re: Very mysterious but bad ATA errors, please help

Some files did end up in there: My Amarok settings, some Pidgin settings, and quite a few entries in .gconf. I deleted them all, I figured it's be easy to just reconstruct those settings if need be....

  16. [other] Very mysterious but bad ATA errors, please help

  18. Re: GNU/Hurd when it's finally ready think it'll be as widly used as GNU/Linux

The obfuscation of most parts of nv is less because they're being evil and more because they're trying not to get sued. There's third-party technology licensed in nVidia firmware for the most part....

  21. Re: GNU/Hurd when it's finally ready think it'll be as widly used as GNU/Linux

That is true. But I'm still not sure I see Hurd going very far if/when it releases. I'm sure there's probably some dandy code in there. But unfortunately for Hurd there are at least two other open...
  22. Re: GNU/Hurd when it's finally ready think it'll be as widly used as GNU/Linux

I'll call them impractical when they don't work. Since they work, "impractical" is not the word I would use.

Sure, I can see how it would cause complacency. But I'm not about to blame nVidia for...
