  1. Poll: Re: Computer Therapy: Let it all out former Windows user

Windows annoys me when I have to deal with it. It takes so long to do anything with it. I try to avoid it where I can.

Poll: Re: AWN vs Cairo Dock?

Docky for me. Always seems much more responsive and better looking too. The only downer is it is a little bit crashy at times.

Poll: Re: Are you happy with your life?

Cerebral Palsy is no barrier to anything. I knew a girl a few years back who had it and despite blindness in one eye, some deafness, etc she didn't let it get to her. She was also one of the coolest...
  4. Re: Billion-pixel image of the Milky Way's centre

If aliens came here we'd really have to be nice to them. Making it to earth would suggest that technologically they were lightyears ahead of us and would pretty much own us. Believe me, until we...

Poll: Re: Are you happy with your life?

I'm happy. I'm starting a new challenge in a couple of weeks, teaching 4th graders English, Maths, Health, History, Geography, etc. It's a nice change from computing G4-12 which I'd done previously....

Re: The Command which wipes the HDD

It's the linux way to assume you know what you're doing. That's how I like it.
  7. Re: Ubuntu or Windows (Please, just an advice, no holy war)

When I install Ubuntu for people I dual-boot them for this very reason. It means you get the best of both worlds. But, honestly, if Ubuntu's not for you, then use Windows. You can get Apache, PHP and...

[ubuntu] Re: How To Provide Remote Assistance To XP User

PS in Ubuntu you'd look for Applications -> Internet -> Remote Desktop Viewer
PPS There's loads of good freebie VNC servers for windows but off the top of my head I can't remember the names, but I'm...

[ubuntu] Re: How To Provide Remote Assistance To XP User

I've used VNC to do the remote control of Windows XP machines. The only pain is that the VNC server must be installed on the XP machine (which is a fairly easy and painless task).

    Re: Halfway through. Installing gentoo.

I might have a go at this once progress reports are done and I have some holiday time :)
  12. Poll: Re: Do you want GNU/Linux to "dominate the desktop"?

    What he said.
  13. Re: What has open source software enabled YOU to do?

It's enabled me to learn much more about networking, a subject I'd previously had zero interest in.

    Re: College Education...

Experience + Post-grad will give you very good prospects. Bachelors is getting too common these days, and somewhat devalued (people with degrees working in call centres). Post-grad is where it's at,...

    Re: Runnin' as Root....

Aye I've had that problem from gksudo nautilus too, it messed up my home directory permissions and caused some untidyness that took a bit of googling to fix. I've got used to CLI for that kind of job...

    Re: Runnin' as Root....

The obvious problem with running as root is that you run programs as root. Firefox with root permissions.. there's an accident waiting to happen. And yes I know Firefox is more secure than IE but if...

Safer but still exposing yourself to unnecessary risk. Why do it when sudo and gksudo do the job?

    Re: Runnin' as Root....

Most of the security issues on Windows are due to users running admin accounts by default. It's not a great idea, and sudo/gksudo can always get you what you need anyway.
  19. Re: The opinion of one of my university lecturers.. :/

Sounds like the guy's just uninformed. He's not tried anything other than MS stuff, and doesn't know better.

For what it's worth, at uni I studied psychology. One class was workplace psychology...

    Re: Thinking of switching

Poll: Re: Are you looking forward to Gnome Shell?

From what I've seen it looks very cool. It brings something new to the table that Mac and Windows don't have, and doing things in its own way. That's kinda important you know!
