  1. [ubuntu] Re: Troubled Windows connection to Ubuntu server

    Star topology - hybrid nodes - L2/L3 - Dell PowerConnect 2824

Yes, there are firewalls, but set up correctly - I disabled FWs, but no difference.
Besides, unless there is an operating system or...
  2. [ubuntu] Troubled Windows connection to Ubuntu server

This post started under Server Platforms, but I think it may be more appropriate to put it here.
I am about to pull out whatever hair I have left...

I have a single LAN with 8 Windows (XP Pro, XP...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

    Re posts #16 & 17:

I am grasping at straws too - all machines have Internet access, and Gateway / Mask / DNS / WINS IPs are configured correctly (see the numbers 1-4 mentioned in post #15).
    ...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

    Hi Chris,

Thanks so much for your responses and your time - I'm going to whip this or die trying.
Please see my answers below (I think the numbered list 1 thru 4 is the most telling):
  5. [ubuntu] Re: LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

Good point - I forgot about the hosts file on each machine - duh.
That should take care of any IP name resolution issues.

From a networking standpoint, I have Samba configured to be domain...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

    Update:

I just went back after lunch, and cannot get to the server via the Network Browser, nor can I get mywebsite again (just from the PCs).

During that time, there have been no interactions...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

Thanks for the tips Chris - I assumed there was connectivity since mounted network drives worked.

I don't know the explanation, but here is what happened:

Pinging the server IP (and Name) was...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

I apologize, I should have mentioned that my Windows firewall statement was incorrect.

When tried to access mywebsite with the firewall off, I entered the IP for the Mac-hosted mywebsite by...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

Thanks for the reply, but that is what is so maddening about this.

Avahi has always been running on the Ubuntu server, and Bonjour has always been running on Windows.
    I mentioned Samba and WWW...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

Thanks for the reply Mark, but I already have the host file populated on each Windows machine with all IPs and names, plus running Ubuntu as the WINS server.
    Network name resolution works perfectly...
  11. [ubuntu] LAN website not accessible from any Windows LAN browsers

I have a website on a standalone Ubuntu server (using virtual host).
I can access the site from 3 different Macs using Safari, Firefox and Chrome.
I can access the site from my Mac using virtual...

[ubuntu] Re: LAN unknown IP addresses

Thanks for the tip on VMware and great IP link! :D
That was definitely VMware's IP, and the link really helps clear up some other network issues.

    Thanks again!

    [ubuntu] LAN unknown IP addresses

Our single LAN network is 192.168.8/24, but after firing up our standalone Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Server and Samba, we have the following data using Netstat on a Mac:

  14. [ubuntu] Re: Samba settings to fileserve to Mac & Windows?

    Thanks Keith.

I just found what looks like might be a very helpful guide: Samba-3 by Example, by John H. Terpstra.
It outlines several different networking scenarios, and the recommended approach...

    I have 10.04 Lucid installed.

It seems like Samba has already been beaten to death in these forums, but I have read 1000 different suggestions from 1000 different people, so I still...
