You would want to run the 4.14.0-14.17 kernel which is now available, it has the patch for Meltdown and Spectre and openGL is working at least on my Nvidia-box.
So 18.04 did get a new patched 4.14 kernel today, runs fine, don't know about performance yet. Image shows cpu_insecure flag meaning the patch is in effect:
...
4.15-rc6 doesn't work with Nvidia too, same failure to compile kernel module for Nvidia. 4.14 works great, compiles the Nvidia module with no probs.
It would be interesting to test 4.15 to see...
4.15-rc5 do not work with my Nvidia GTX1070 on 18.04 Daily, it starts looping halfway through boot. But 4.14-13 works just fine.
edit. I seem to recall now that it is normal, historically Nvidia...
Thanks, useful command, I will try it the next time Ubiquity is borked :)
In launchpad? Yes, but I cant find the button for it ;)
I changed status to "fix released" though, suggesting a fresh distro install is "the fix"
So which is the best multimedia oriented distro? I suggest it still is Ubuntu, even though not perfect.
Thanks! That was healthy information that got me experimenting, first I tested todays daily live iso and it DID have internet using 4.2.0-7! Sadly, it wasn't possible to install since Ubiquity is...
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/1495852
Done too!
All other kernels up to and including 4.1.7 works fine, I have reported the bug at bugzilla but have yet to see any solution to the problem. Googling the issue it looks like it has affected others,...
Kernel 4.2.0-10.11 came, and still no internet. The new kernel 4.1.7 works fine though, I dont think Ill even bother trying the 4.3 RC. Something happened from 4.2 and onwards ...
I marked this...
Yes, looks like I have too, kernel 4.2.0-10 landed today and still no improvement. I guess all kernel devs are on Intel laptops these days and will never observe this regressen. The nic in question...
I mentioned earlier in the thread I've tried downgrading already, problem seem to be kernel vs realtek which is also indicated by the new Realtek dkms-package from Ubuntu(which doesnt work, but seem...
Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 11)
So Ubuntu released a separate Realtek 8168-dkms package, didnt solve anything though, it compiled alright but still no...
Yeah, but as obvious from previous posts so does kernel-team:s kernels include the patch, which is not the case with official kernels nor the source.
Also, Realtek integrated LAN still doesn't...
Thanks, tried the downgrade as suggested in your thread but didnt work, Im on 64-bit.
Thanks! I knew things where cooking, adding kernel-team ppa and the new graphics-drivers ppa( http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/08/ubuntu-nvidia-graphics-drivers-ppa-is-ready-for-action ) I finally got...
Maybe thats one reason why Linus called off a final release for 4.2? Seems to be a licensing issue in the kernel, not allowing non-GPL drivers to use some of the essential code. This sucks, as any...
Wily works great so far, exciting knowing breakage will come, particularly for us with Nvidia graphics ....
On the OC subtopic earlier, I did some busclock as Haswell permits it and if the RAM can...
Only if you don't want Synaptics repositories gui to crash ...
The proprietary Nvidia-drivers works! For the first time in a 4.0-RC* kernel, Nvidia 349.12 and GTX680 ....
This still works, sort of, with the latest drivers:
It seems it's now only necessary to change "NVIDIA" to "GPL", uvm wont install though. Running RC7 with 346.35 and GTX680. Legacy drivers...
Yay! rc3 works great too, and there was a new vbox today which also works just fine :-)
Whatever, the fix did work as advertised anyway, now running 3.19-rc2(lowlatency) on Vivid with Nvidia GTX680 :-)
