Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

I'm getting the same with 2.6.17.14 and 2.6.17.

    CC init/version.o
    LD init/built-in.o
    LD .tmp_vmlinux1
    init/built-in.o: In function `try_name':
    do_mounts.c:(.text+0x4b8):...

You can remove them via Synaptic Package Manager.
  3. Re: Picking the Kernel thats Right for You (Possible Speed Increase)

I'm a little confused. I thought SMP was a method that two processors used to communicate with one another. So what advantage does installing it with 1 processor have?

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

Is there anyway to add the usplash after I've compiled and installed? Or am I going to have to compile again?

I guess I forget to check "VESA VGA graphics support" and "framebuffer Console...
  6. Re: Picking the Kernel thats Right for You (Possible Speed Increase)

I also noticed this when going back to just 686 from 686-SMP.
  7. Re: Picking the Kernel thats Right for You (Possible Speed Increase)

Temporary, you can modify the /boot/grub/menu.lst file, and place the 386 section above the 686.

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

Yea, you can use this guide for 2.6.17 to. Just make sure you get the ck1 for 2.6.17, and not 2.6.16.

A list of ck changes can be found on his website here,...

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

Well I don't understand, it's still not working for some reason. Now, ACPI_TOSHBIA, which handles the hotkeys, has a dot by it (being loaded as a module), so do I need to do something special perhaps...

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

Is that the old kernel source or the new one?

Also, what does a dot mean in the xconfig program? I understand a checkmark and an empty box, but I don't get the dot.

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

Anyone? If I copy the .config file doesn't that mean all my settings from the previous kernel should be copied over?

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

Whenever I use this method to install a new kernel I loose the use of my Toshiba hotkeys, like display brightness. I copied the .config file over like it says to do, so shouldn't whatever option it...

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

Because kernels created this way don't appear in the Synaptic Package Manager, what is the correct way to remove them?
  15. Re: Rip CD's in MP3 format @ 192 kbps CBR in Sound Juicer

Awesome that worked, thanks. Now is there anyway I can use VBR equivalent to Lames "-standard" switch?
  16. Re: Rip CD's in MP3 format @ 192 kbps CBR in Sound Juicer

I don't have this package. Multiverse is enabled.
  17. Re: Picking the Kernel thats Right for You (Possible Speed Increase)

Ah, I was doing uname -r. Yea, -a says smp. Thanks.

Now does this mean my processor doesn't support HT? Because I do only have 1 CPU listed in Monitor.
  18. Re: Picking the Kernel thats Right for You (Possible Speed Increase)

Well I'm pretty sure I have one of the three P4-Ms with HT, but the Resources tab is only showing 1 CPU. Is there another way I can tell if I'm running the 686-smp kernel and not just 686?
  19. Re: Picking the Kernel thats Right for You (Possible Speed Increase)

Should it show 2 even if I have 1?
  20. Re: Picking the Kernel thats Right for You (Possible Speed Increase)

I installed 686-smp, but when I boot up only 686 and 386 are in the grub menu (I was previously using 686). When I look in Synaptic it shows 686-smp installed. But in the /boot/ folder I don't see...
  21. Re: Rip CD's in MP3 format @ 192 kbps CBR in Sound Juicer

I'm having the same problem with the code pekko provided. Upgrading to Dapper shouldn't have any problem.

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

So instead of taking the 2.6.16 from the link you provided, could I take the 2.6.16.20 from kernel.org and then apply the latest ck patch to that?

Do the ck patches have a homepage that lists...

Re: How To Compile the new 2.6.16 kernel from kernel.org

I think the headers are included in the /usr/src/linux-whatever_version_you_installed directory, if you followed this guide.
