    I'd suggest Abiword. It's much more lightweight than OpenOffice.org Writer and can do more than "Text Edit".

    Maybe you just need to get to know more about your existing desktop features. afaik both gnome and kde have shortcut, which opens little command line window, something similar to ms windows run...
