I will definitely stick with LTS - the only question was 14.04 or 15.04. 14.04 wins. I already have that running in a virtual machine and it's very nice.

I'm a long time Ubuntu user, and switched to Mint 17 and am plan on moving back to Ubuntu in a day or two.

It's my primary OS and use as entertainment center as well. I don't see much on 15.04...

I disagree. I tested an i5 3570k (the "K" does not support vt-d). Video playback in the Ubuntu 14.04 guest and 12.04 host is choppy at best - both h264 and MP4 video. I have a friend with a non-k i7...

Also, the player is VLC. The video isn't streaming - I've been testing MKV and mp4 files - low resolution. The files are local, but the connection to the shared folder isn't slow.

I run Windows Vista in Virtual Box on my Ubuntu HTPC for when Silverlight is needed. From what I've read Silverlight will never be available for Linux. At least Vista is good for something!

Solved - tried a different USB port and it works - video and audio no configuration needed. The USB port that resulted in failure may have been USB 3.0.
