    Re: A Nas for me?

Yup - even Windows nowadays have OpenSSH. I simply connect using a file browser and does not use permanent network mounts.

    [ubuntu] Re: Harddisks getting corrupted

Bad power quality is frequently the reason for corruptions. Maybe you just need to upgrade your UPS.

[ubuntu] Re: Need guidance about file compression

Some people hate this kind of answer:
    $ man gzip

That would actually tell you everything.

You could also type man gzip in a web browser. :)

    W0t? You don’t keep a backup of /dev/random? ;)
  8. [SOLVED] Re: Ubuntu 21.04. How do I check an rsync backup set?

Rsync copies files. It ensures that a file was copied correctly using a CRC. That is all it does.

If you want to check a file, go there with a file browser and open it.
  9. [xubuntu] Re: Can NSO Pegasus infect my Xubuntu laptop

It depends on who you are and where you work. If you are Joe Sixpack or Pete The Plumber, then you don’t have much to worry about.

Re: sane.d scanner and pdf size

    Howdy,
You can resample and resize PDFs with Imagemagick “convert”. For example change it to 300 dpi and BW for small file size. Some googling for examples with convert will get you going.

[SOLVED] Re: Transfer all data from hard disk

I would use rsync, since it does proper error detection and correction. In a large set of data, you may get one or two errors with ordinary cp and rsync will prevent that.

Re: Where to put new program

Note that the directories /usr/local and /opt are customarily used for user installed programs and these directories will not be messed up by a system update.
  17. Re: Running two commands at the same time in bash script

There is also more complex job control possible with the batch command, which has subcommands like bg, fg, jobs, kill etc.

Btw when I need to be paranoid about security, I use OpenBSD.
  20. [xubuntu] Re: Firefox very slow trough VNC connection

Yes. Don’t use VNC. Learn to use SSH instead.

  22. Re: What Linux OS is purpose built for security?

Any Linux distribution will suffice for that use case. I suggest that you install Linux, then relax and enjoy the system. You will gradually learn why you suddenly don’t have issues with viruses...

[kubuntu] Re: Synology NAS problem & question

Try the IP address instead of the hostname. For example:

Connect with Windows, then find the IP address by looking on your router DHCP status, or snoop it with tcpdump...

    Re: VNC access until reboot

Hmm, VNC is mostly a Windows thing. With UNIX computers (Linux/Mac/BSD) SSH generally is much easier to get going and is secure and more powerful.
