My Gigabyte GT710 works both with Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 18.10.
@oldfred
It is Kepler not Fermi.
Thanks for info. I am curious why Ubuntu 18.04 works without issue with Wayland enabled and why login screen is set by default to Wayland?
If you don't need exactly GDM, install LightDM.
sudo apt install lightdm
Try this in terminal:
snap list
17.10 was released last year and if your CPU is i5 8300H (I do not see i7 8300H) it was launched this year. Probably you have to stay with 18.04 or wait for 18.04.2.
Give us more info about your hardware.
AMD64 is what you want, but instead 17.10 install 16.04 because it is LTS.

Edit:...
Before you start blaming kernel, try to use Camorama instead Cheese.
It is slightly tricky in Bionic. Try right click below bin icon.
Thanks for answers. In a few days I will install fresh system.

GNOME Calculator does't start. Anybody else has the same problem?

I understand your printer is connected via router, so you do not need any driver if you decide to scan to folder (using samba/SMB) or scan to e-mail. Scan to folder is OS independent. Scan to e-mail...
Standard CD is enough for Ubuntu 16.04 Server. I don't know where you saw 800 MB, I see "ubuntu-16.04.1-server-i386.iso" has 652 MB. You will find it in link below.

Try to install Ubuntu 16.04 Server Edition 32-bit, if successful you can add later LXDE or full Lubuntu-desktop package.
I have to admit, for 384 MB RAM, Windows XP is the best choice.
I suppose lack of SSE2 is your problem. You can check CPU flags in terminal:
inxi -f
Ubuntu 16.04 and AMD GPU is not the best choice for gamers. Perhaps this is your problem.

Nvidia-304.xxx (tested).
Edit:
I have forgotten to add, Compiz does not like this driver, so use it only with Ubuntu MATE, Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
