I followed the entire guide, and java is still not working. I removed all the icedtea plugin stuff, so the system acts as if there isn't any java installed at all, yet I followed this guide to the...
I am trying to install Java 6.23 which is needed for a game (for a family member) and have followed this page but Firefox won't seem to see the new plugin.

Here is a beginner's guide to get you started that you can read:

But to answer your question, GnuPG is like a big authentication method, and we use...
Sitting around worrying about it gets nowhere. If you are afraid to run it, don't run it and don't worry about it. Otherwise, try it and find out. If the system would break (which I highly doubt it...
It's nice to see you again too :)
The worst a trojan/virus can do (if you should accidentally run something without root privileges) is total your user account; not the whole system. Now, if it requires sudo (root) privileges to run,...
Meaning, it will not work or act by itself, (example, browsing a website) but requires you the user to install it or run it.
Yeah, I didn't mean to do that... :S

Tried, and it didn't help.
Try ALT+F2 and typing in seahorse and going to the Passwords tab.
Greetings,
I am running an old version of Ubuntu (9.04) on this laptop, but that shouldn't matter for this problem. Besides that, I have 2 (two) users on this system, both with administrative (sudo)...
If you store your executables in ~/.bin, then add this to your ~/.bashrc:
export PATH=.bin/:$PATH
Sure enough. It was an image. (It wasn't me copying pictures... it was my sister, and then I have to dig through to see what she did wrong :S). Right now, I'm attempting to recover a bunch of inodes...
Well, I ran fsck on the partition, and it didn't fix the problem, and I chmod'ed the "file" to 755 (as is what the other ones are), and it's just an executable file now, nothing more. Hmm.
It's more a security tradeoff. We put that in there some newbies can reset their password easily, when they forget their passwords, and so geeks can get a root shell when the mess up their account....
While a physical lock is a step in the right direction, it still wouldn't stop a theif with a bolt cutter. Then, the CMOS battery can be reset, and all that physical security went out the window,...
If someone can change the GRUB configuration, he is already at your system, and security is already compromised, as he now could steal your system, open your system, or take the hard drive. The only...
First, let me give a little bit of background information:
This is a USB shared drive, with an ext3 partition. The partition is located at /dev/sdb1. I use Samba to share...
I added the following line to my /etc/rc.local, and it fixed my problem:
sh -c 'setterm -blank 0 -powersave off -powerdown 0 < /dev/console > /dev/console 2>&1'

I've never used fetchmail via init.d/. I've just always executed it via user crontab, and from there you can redirect output to /dev/null if you wanted.
Hey guys,
I have my headless server, and just plugged a spare monitor into it, opened up screen, ran htop on it, so I can see the system status, but the screen keeps shutting off after so long....
