What is MFD? I'm guessing not minimum fatal dose? ;)
I followed the instructions that went with the downloads. I installed lsb via sudo in a terminal window - I don't know what this does or whether it helped. I have a 64 bit processor, so I installed...
Thanks kurt18947. I wonder about how it will go with the print heads, but we'll see. The disk that comes with it does not have Linux drivers, so I will try the link to drivers that I found. I don't...
I followed Epson links which told me that the ET-4500 is only supported in MacOS & Windows, but the I found this which looks promising:...
Do Epson EcoTank printers like the ET-4500 work with Ubuntu?
I tried ddrescue. It didn't seem to do anything. Am I getting this wrong?
knoppix@Microknoppix:~/ddrescue-1.9$ ./ddrescue -n /dev/sda /dev/sdb rescued.log Press Ctrl-C to interrupt Initial...
I've dowloaded Knoppix 8.1 onto DVD & it boots fine. But really I need a drive on USB as I only have two serial interfaces for HDDs. I suppose one option is to have the target drive in a USB caddy?

I re-installed an old version of Firefox & I don't get the crashes now.
Is there a way to just load the security updates without changing the version?
Thank you rbmorse. I'm guessing this is hard-won knowledge!
Thanks for responding yancek. Although the 'disk's utility lists the faulty drive, no options are offered except Edit Mount Options. No mount option is offered.
Windows doesn't see the faulty...
I hadn't thought of that. I have a spare disk of the same size so I might try that. Perhaps I could use clonezilla? I''ll read through your linked info. Thanks for the suggestion.
Yes it does sound like the boot sector is the bad sector. Is there no way of re-mapping it somewhere else & creating a new one?
The 500GB Seagate drive ran Win7, but now won't boot. I've installed a new 2TB drive with Win7 & Ubuntu on it. Win7 does not see the 500GB drive. Ubuntu Disks utility says "One bad sector", but does...
I tried your command. No output.
All noted.
Impavidus thanks for that test. I'll try it.
Old but working PCs are being made obsolete by the internet. How wasteful!
I allowed Lubuntu 14.04.1 to upgrade & this also upgraded Firefox to version 56.
Firefox started fine and would connect to websites, but then often crashed when opening another window or...
I've re-installed without formatting /home. Grub has returned & with a Win XP option too.
I've still no idea how the boot sector got lost.
Thankyou for guiding me Grahammechanical and...
The boot-repair has fixed the WinXP boot fine.
I would like to boot sda as now/before and have grub allow me Linux as default and WinXP as an option, but I don't know how to do that. There's a...
I can see a grub directory on the sdb disk. I used to boot sda, grub would kick in and default to Lubuntu.
all the partitions mount & the data looks ok :)
I've just gone a bit wild & ran...
Sounds good Bashing-om :)
lubuntu@lubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -lu

Units = sectors...
Thanks for responding grahammechanical.
GParted took a while to run, but shows all the expected partitions for sda and sdb, so it has found the partitions somehow.
You could be right...
Thank you yancek :)
I re-installed Linux from the Live disk & this fixed the problem, whatever it was.
My old PC was running fine with Lubuntu in 3 partitions on the second (slave) IDE disk, with dual boot via GRUB of WinXP on the first (master) disk. Other partitions on the same second disk are...
