Thanks, thats exactly what I was looking for. Never would have gotten it with google.

BTW, is there a forum I could go to that would be a better place to chat/learn about scripting in the shell?

    [all variants] Podcast fetcher/copy script?

I know this is probably not the best place to ask, but I don't really know where else to go. I'm looking for a lightweight program that can run in the background all the time, and automatically...

  4. [all variants] Re: Use USB key install disk as repo source?

Well indeed, that is a silly question. However, it was the correct one, as the system now works.

Anyone know how I might have done this differently, say, if I didn't have multiple OSes...
  5. [all variants] Re: Use USB key install disk as repo source?

My WiFi chip is the Broadcom BCM4312 802.11 a/b/g

I figured out that the live boot from the USB key installs these packages, in this order, when using the restricted drivers:

  6. [all variants] Use USB key install disk as repo source?

I wanted to try a newer version (9.10), so I DL'd the iso and put it to a USB key. Boot and install to new partition just fine. When running from the live session, I can use the "restricted...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: 9.04 desktop environment meltdown! Everything dead except the command line

Actually, there is no 3D acceleration for any user, so the config that is messed up must be on the main OS partition. Or the BIOS/MBR thing...

Any more opinions, or should I just format it?
    (I'm...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: 9.04 desktop environment meltdown! Everything dead except the command line

Interesting theory, I'll see what I can see with the CMOS. Its a laptop, so I have to half-disassemble it to get to the jumper (hooray for dell )

Would this fix malware in the MBR as...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: 9.04 desktop environment meltdown! Everything dead except the command line

No OpenGL programs will run. nvidia-settings dialog has everything normal inside. I don't have many more ideas except a format and re-install.
  10. [ubuntu] 9.04 desktop environment meltdown! Everything dead except the command line

I run Jaunty with compiz, emerald, AWN, and screenlets. Nautilus, gnome-panel, etc are disabled by default. To run most programs, I have a hotkey setup to bring up a terminal, which still works. ...

[ubuntu] Re: 9.10 on Dell Latitude?

I have one of those, haven't used it since 2005 when I ran slack 9 on it and used it for a download manager and dedicated chat screen. I'm thinking that ubuntu 6.06 is about the same age, can't...

  16. [ubuntu] Re: Color gradient desktop background looks bad. Need a fix.

Never mind, figured out how to use Compiz to render the BG rather than nautilus, looks much better.
  17. [ubuntu] Color gradient desktop background looks bad. Need a fix.

I like a simple background, just a color gradient. Something like light grey at the bottom and black at the top. When I set it up with the gnome background menu, I can see the lines between colors....

What about the other partition on my main disk though? It is a 19GB ext3 system that is nearly empty, but only 4GB of the file will go there either.

  23. [ubuntu] Ubuntu is chewing through my laptop battery like candy.
