    I figured I'd set up a test partition to test the waters before jumping head on to a full upgrade.
    I've created a new ext4 partition on my disk and marked it to be used as root for the install....

    I'll try using the -n flag on shutdown when I'm in reach of my laptop, I'm assuming (if it works) that it would be safer than cutting off power to the laptop at the halt point...

    Sadly this does not help,
    it does seem to 'kick start' the shutdown process again but halts at about the same point

    I've done as you suggested and it didn't work (gave the same error),
    I then thought I'd go ahead and reinstall java but now the problem got worse:
