I made a search and found others having the same problem as me but the solutions were too advanced for someone new to linux as myself.

My Dell Vostro A90 is loaded with Ubuntu 9.04...

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 the hardy heron, I installed it in vista from the internet and have it dual booted with vista. Could this be my problem?

I'm still looking at the page you provided...
every time I try to run the commands in my terminal I get negative messages.
