Xubuntu Core 16.04.1 with various additions, fully updated.

That was the first thing I tried, and even tried reinstalling. But the particular ones I'm after show No Preview Available and can't be started.

After the latest updates I've lost my favorite screen savers, most (all?) of which are apparently from the Gnome collection. Does anyone have any idea what happened?

If you type grub rescue > ls (hd1, msdos4), I'll bet you see it formatted as ext2, which indicates it is your Linux partition. Knowing that, you can follow the rest of the instructions you found.

That's an older file, superceeded by a new one. If you open /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/' you'll see two 20auto-upgrades files with different extensions. The newer one is in use, older is ignored.

All I can think of is that you might check in Synaptic to make sure uswsusp is installed.

I'm afraid I can't help further - my personal experience with this sort of thing doesn't go beyond the straight dpkg --purge. You might try again and add --force-help, but I've never tried that.

You might try the following:

sudo apt-get remove --purge <the official name of the program>
If that doesn't work, you could use the root account by running

sudo -i
