I had the same problem and simply added the command 'upower' to my startup items...fixed the problem permanently on my Macbook 2,1.

The real problem was that my /var/lib/dpkg/status file had 1 bad character in it.

Running
gksu gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status revealed this...
