Using Natty:
Unable to turn off the monitor using the screensaver settings. It will BLANK but not turn off.
I can use
sleep 1; xset dpms force off to turn it off but I prefer having a setting.

The correct way
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gnome-terminal
This will reset the gnome terminal back to OEM configuration

It's always BEST to do a fresh install.....backup your data and just do it.
Something may be contained in the ~/.bashrc file. A quick look may tell you the reference.
gksudo gedit ~/.bashrc
Take a look there. Remove the line that has that reference and save.

Don't do it. Just get a fresh DVD and download and burn, burn, burn. Do a fresh install. It's not worth the hassle, REALLY.

There are some differences between GRUB 1 and GRUB 2. I think in reading somewhere this has happen before.
I would upgrade the GRUB or use grub-customizer or better yet do both.
Find the correct driver. This one has its limitations as it states but you realize this already.
What were you using before?
BTW just because the driver: p4-clockmod is stating the processor...
