Re: What's your homepage set to?

Mine isn't set to google.com itself, but to iGoogle.

It's google with search engine at top, but you can add widgets, rss feeds and all kinds of content you find interesting.

    Re: Solitaire!

I did a fun similar trick back in the Windows 3.1 days. But it was with minesweeper.

I "knew" a security guard that worked the night shift would often jump on our computer and play minesweeper...

250Gb on my relatively new laptop (100 Gb for XP, 150Gb for Ubuntu).
  5. Re: Attn. Project managers - Planner vs MS Project

    Hmmmm....I've never heard of planner.

I thought "Open Project" was the OSS alternative to MS Project (though I've never used either one).

    Re: sleep(int) in C++?

This is a busy loop and thankfully NOT how the real sleep() works. The real sleep uses signals and signal handlers.
  10. Re: Can anybody recomend a good Abuntu book ?

I got "Ubuntu Linux Bible" (Von Hagen) as a read and reference when I first started playing with Ubuntu.

I didn't like the book, but my biggest complaint was that it was too oriented toward...

Re: What Sky OS is for?

Looking at the video, its a pretty simple interface. Nothing new..in fact a bit less than impressive.

It seems like they wrote a new kernel (which I'm not downplaying as "easy" in any way) and...

OK, I'd never heard of them but just looked them up.

I think I am with you in that I don't understand its point. I can't see anything they are doing that is new or different. From what I can see...

    Re: Commandline

You would probably to do something like:
    a) query what window manager is being used
    b) use WM APIs to iterate windows and find out which one you program is running in
    c) use WM APIs to determine...

    Re: Searching/indexing a binary file

You could also scan the entire file at startup, create an array or hash of the records and sizes. Each entry could contain the offset to where that record is within the file.

    Re: .vb files

Not sure I understand the question.

.vb files are just text source code files. You open them using any text editor.

Do you mean how to you compile them in Linux? That's a different question...

    Re: Compression Algorithm Help

    +1

There have been teams of math PhDs that have worked in this field for years. Unless its an exercise "just to see if you can do it" then just use existing compression libraries that are already...

It sounds like whatever you are using for a reference might be using functions of a newer version of the library. You should check and see if the library on your machine (as well as header files) are...

  25. Re: The ubuntu and linux is a lie | Linux is not meant for desktop

    Exactly how it should be!

The point was more of a statement about the "desktop user" (aka average user) than the OS. The point is that the "average user" does not want to spend time to get things...
