I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit on a Sony VAIO laptop, processor Intel Core i7 CPU M 620 @ 2.67GHz × 4, memory 4GB, GeForce GT 320M (dedicated RAM). To me, that sounds more than enough to run...
For some reason (possibly due to putting it in my checked-in baggage during a flight), I cannot open the main partition on this hard drive. The data was very important to me and unfortunately I don't...
The Persian font used in facebook (Chrome) suddenly changed today. I don't think it's facebook because
1. Google calendar font seems to have changed too
2. I used to have this problem with...
I have installed Octave (from repos) for the first time. I also installed the Java API package.
When I run octave from terminal, here's what I get
warning: timestamp on file...
I'm looking for an action multiplayer game for linux. Counter Strike Source seems too old, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on the other hand is apparently just rumored to be going to be ported to...
This a very old controversial topic. I did google it, but still I'd like to know people's ideas here.
Do you prefer IDE or text editor + command line for C programming? I know that I definitely...
I am trying to compile a program that was written for Fortran 77. Apparently g77 is now obsolete and what I understand is that GFortran should be able to compile codes written for 77 (because 95 is...
I'm sure Windows doesn't pre load VLC.
As I said, aside from slow application start ups, everything else is great. Even for VLC, once it opens there's no problem, even when I'm watching a blu-ray...
I don't believe faster processor or more memory is going to make any difference. I play Call of Duty on this computer! Does GNOME need more resources than that? Besides, my memory is only %34 full...
That's disappointing. Faster speed was the main thing we boasted about when talking to Windows users.
CPU is usually under %5 for each core, and more than %50 of my memory is usually empty and available.
No it's not shared RAM. The graphics card has its own 512 MB memory. Since it says "Total Available Graphics Memory: 2263 MB" then I suppose it can borrow some more memory if needed.
I have tried nouveau, Nvidia driver from its website, and Nvidia proprietary driver from repos, which is what I'm using now.
I have tried both GNOME and Unity, with and without 3D effects - no...
I used to use Ubuntu a couple of years ago, back in Windows XP's era (on a different computer) and I remember it was much faster than Windows.
Recently I switched back to Ubuntu (12.10) But this...
Okay. I installed a fresh Ubuntu as my system was so unstable after installing and removing Unity and GNOME Shell several times.
The problem with slow (first time only) application start-up...
Yes I am running Nvidia's own driver. Although the driver on repos didn't work for me, I downloaded from Nvidia website directly.
Installing the driver made OS start-up slower. I think a couple of...
There you go. It seems that I am not running Ubuntu on a primary partition.
It is an almost fresh install. I have added a few application like Skype and NetBeans
I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with GNOME 3 (although the situation was no different with Unity). Starting application takes a long time for the first time (starting chrome can take up to 10 seconds...

I think you're right. I'm running 3.6 and I have the dash of course. But the sidebar doesn't seem to be part of GNOME Shell anymore.
Nevertheless I am loving GNOME 3. Unity was so buggy. GNOME 3...
I just installed GNOME 3 (Ubuntu 12.10). Some websites talk about a sidebar (http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-tips-for-making-gnome-3-and-ubuntu-unity-more-useful/583) but I don't have...
I have added my facebook and Google accounts to "Online Accounts" and I have also installed web app integration for Gmail through Firefox. I don't see any difference though. I read in reviews that...
I'm running Ubuntu 12.10. In system monitor, System tab:
Release 12.10 (quantal) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.5.0-19-generic
GNOME 3.6.0
And I see GNOME logo on the left side. Is it supposed to be...
