also after a new distro is released, try waiting a couple weeks or so for the really big bugs that are there when a new distro launches.

it is different with every motherboard because every manufactuer puts its own bios on the motherboard.

Do you have an intel cpu or is there a intergrated graphics card on your motherboard?
Try to disable the intergrated graphics card in your bios.
Have you tried to look for drivers?
Try to find drivers for it in the system settings, adittional driver section.

You can also install ubuntu with the gnome session fallback, it gives you the same interface as 10.04 and gives you the compability of a newer version of ubuntu :)

sometimes it just is when you have installed it a couple times things get working :/
at least that is the fix i had when skype was missing some buttons :)

you can download it from the software centre and you can also configure the grub resolution.
