I had a similar problem mine was log files that were getting far too big, check /var/log and see if the space is being taken up by log files, weird problem I know but on mine I filled a 20gb root...
a little hint look for "overscan compensation" in the nvidia-settings it allows u to resize your desktop :)
ps also make sure u run "sudo nvidia-settings" from terminal or probably bettter command...
