I don't know what other information I can provide to help resolve this.

Have you tried reseating your laptop battery? I have seen that resolve a variety of boot issues.
Does the problem go away if the battery is charged?

You can also install the Gnome Desktop Environment from the Software Center, and then enable it. It works fine on 12.04; I'm using it right now.

First question: do you want to keep your Windows 8 installation and run a dual boot configuration, or do you want to go completely Ubuntu?
