    I get the same error as you in the nvidia settings gui but I have been able to temporarily get the resolution up to 1152x864 (but I need 1280x1024).

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

    The "fix" appeared to be in having nVidia Settings and compiz on the same page - Sync to VBlank in one of them didn't work but having it enabled in both does work....
