    I have been using the openchrome driver for a few years
    on a via pc3500g mobo with no issues (no 3d)
    flash player is pretty crappy in full screen but
    enjoy videos in mplayer and vlc no problem...

    if you boot up in recovery mode and choose to boot to text terminal try
    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change "vesa" to "openchrome"
    save and then reboot.
