Probably the answer is yes, if Ubuntu devs stick to Unity. Mint 12 is extremely usable, while Ubuntu 11.10 is hard to use because of Unity. I have moved completely to Linux Mint.
Using Mint 12 right now and let me tell you, its FANTASTIC. It works like a DESKTOP, but with bells and whistles. Good job Mint!!! Made my computer usable again.

If it helps the version I have is 7.9 I think I need 7.1 to make this problem disappear.
Is it possible to just roll back the version of Mesa on my install to an earlier version...I think this is the key to getting my game to work.
