Re: USB 3.0 or USB 0.3?

Likely a fake - with modified firmware to appear as 1TB, but probably really only 8GB.

I stopped buy from online retail due to te fakes. Walking into a box store and buying usually ensures...

Re: USB 3.0 or USB 0.3?

USB is a bus. It provides a theoretical max throughput only. It is usually shared by multiple devices.
Storage devices could be faster than usb2, but few were faster than usb3 until NVMe SSDs.

  3. Re: Autofs working - but conflicting with /media/~user

Gnome with gio/gvfs are the problem mounting automatically otsd autofs. I don't have a GUI on my plex system, so I've never seen the issue. Perhaps if the file manager wasn't running, gvfs/gio...
  4. Re: Cannot see external usb hard drive Ubuntu 20.04 X64

dmesg -w maybe easier. It is basically dmesg|tail -f

Also, sudo is not needed with dmesg ... er ... yet. There have been some discussions about properly locking log files, so sometime in the next...
  5. Re: what are the best alternatives to google calander? tutanota perhaps?

Calendar servers are one of the easiest to self-host. No privacy fails with that. Nextcloud has a calendar server and both can be hosted on a raspberry pi system from 5 yrs ago. ...

    News to me. Please explain.

su - username **is** preferred to my knowledge, as it causes a login to the other userid which sets the environment of that account. From the manpage:

  7. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 static connection doesn't get search domain after boot.

    Don't use systemd-resolved?
    Or resolvconf
    Or network-manager

The manually modified /etc/resolv.conf works perfectly, just like it has since the mid-1990s. All the extra complexities aren't...

[ubuntu] Re: 20.04 server: netplan replacement?

You can always setup 'ip' scripts.
  9. Re: Any experienced with FreeIPA/OpenLDAP on Linux?

that's really only possible for manually managed users - not so easy with daemon accounts, if that's your goal. Any accounts that need to work prior to networking being available can't really use...

Re: 14.04 to 16.04 upgrade issue

14.04 regular support ended in 2019.
Today, nobody should be installing 16.04, as regular support for that release ends in April - 3 months from now.

Install 20.04. Between 14.04 and later...

Re: Frequent crashes, nothing in logs

When ls doesn't work, that's a huge failure. Reseat the cables, run fsck, run SMART tests and reports (2 separate commands). SMART should show a bad cable or slowly failing storage, but not always....
  12. [ubuntu] Re: Cancelled resizing operation and can't access the partition now

No help for this OP, but stuff like this is why all my backups contain the output from parted -lm. If anything corrupts a partition table on any disk, there is a copy in the backups to put it back...

[kubuntu] Re: fstab no longer mounting nfs shares at boot

Bad options cause the entire line to be ignored in the fstab. Is x-systemd.after=network-online.target allowed?

  15. [gnome] Re: How do I open PDF's with the command "firejail okular" rather than just "okular"?

What? You've lost me completely. .desktop files are not specific to Gnome.

That just confirms a storage subsystem issue ... or you were mistyping the command. New people who don't use tab-completion often mistype commands. Heck, even with tab-completion, people sometimes...

Re: Frequent crashes, nothing in logs

I'd think it was some sort of hardware or data corruption issue. SSDs that are failing have causes this issue that I've seen.

can be a bad cable, failing storage, bad PCI seating, power supply...
  18. [SOLVED] Re: Migrating from Windows 10 - Question on Third party apps extenstion

    Lots of great advice above.

    Re: Frustration

    In theory, running:

should handle that stuff automatically. My 20.04 system is only virtual, so I can't test it, but it does work on 16.04 and 18.04 as I...
