Thanks, heronbas - I was glad to come across your note. Setting BIOS to AHCI also solved getting DOS to boot on a 6Gb/s Sata-3 drive.

lightdm broke in 12.04 when attempting to add a 2nd display with nvidia. now back to that - hopefully won't break again.
Many thanks to Ubuntu and the posters here - saved the day (Windows CD's did not work - were getting 0x0000007B errors):
sudo apt-get install lilo
sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr
