Loaded the manager and tried different window options nothing helped. It happens in Unity. I switched to Cinnamon which I really like. Thinking it must be nautilus. Not a big deal just strange.

I think I read somewhere that the fuse firmware looks for a windows style file path. You have to open the playlist with gedit and change them from the Linux file path
I tried xfburn after making a couple coasters with brasero. It worked fine. I guess judging by the comments on software center brasero has serious issues
I don't know about python but you can edit metadata in banshee and VLC

I would agree safe mode never prevented me from editing sometimes I get green screen at the beginning but I don't think it shows in the output
try converting with ffmpeg (or winff) to avi or vcd it should open fine after that
