I'm using Lucid (10.04.3). This fix works fine for me. I haven't had any problems with the process shutting down since I changed the settings in FF config.

sudo cp /media/cdrom0/Install/Data/baseq2/*.pak /usr/lib/games/quake2/baseq2
Install quake2 and quake2-data via Synaptic or apt-get ....
Copy the PAK files from your Windows install CD to /usr/lib/games/quake2/baseq2
Type quake2 in a terminal to start the game...

This was remedied by enabling Fiesty Backports in Software Sources.. Upgrading Wine from 0.9.39 to 0.9.41... Problems disappeared!!! =D>

OK I see you've installed Quake2 Forge.. if you installed quake2 via synaptic you just need to type quake2 in the cli... If you installed by some other means I can't help you...
