    I would recommend Debian, with an XFCE4 desktop. It will run well on low RAM machines and has better support for the ppc platform than most other distros. I don think Debian deserves its reputation...

    That's just the default behavior of the terminal. Passwords don't appear when you type them. Just type it and hit enter.
