  1. [ubuntu] Re: Mid 2007 Macbook 2,1 Ubuntu 12.04, no sound from headphones

Same hardware, same issue, thanks a lot.
  2. [ubuntu] prevent Gnome 3 from restarting in fallback mode

How can I prevent Gnome 3 from restarting in fallback mode when it crashes? (which is very rarely, mostly when messing around with external displays). If it crashes I want it to re-start the proper...

[SOLVED] Re: Only 3.5gb ram on 64bit?

Definitely using 64bit. Other apps report the correct 3.721gb of ram, it's simply the gnome system info panel that threw me off. Dunno' why it rounds so wildly.

[SOLVED] Re: Only 3.5gb ram on 64bit?

OK, think I figured it out. The integrated graphics are using 256mb, and for whatever reason the gnome settings panel aggressively rounds down the ~3.72gb to 3.5gb ram under system info.

[SOLVED] Only 3.5gb ram on 64bit?

Got a new, cheap, but should-be-fully-64bit-capable Acer laptop, w/ an Arrandale CPU and Ironlake graphics, and 4gb ram. Installed 64bit Ubuntu (came with Windows 7 but didn't note whether it saw all...
  6. [SOLVED] Re: gnome 3 - activities:applications double entries-horrid icons

Just installed the 'gnome' package on 11.10 (Gnome 3 is much easier for my mom to understand than Unity) and ran into the same problem. Removing menu-xdg did the trick, but it's annoying this bug...

[ubuntu] Re: Video tearing in 11.10 :(

No matter what I set the refresh rate and/or resolution to manually, I can't get ride of the tearing so long as the external display is either mirrored, or the secondary display (i.e. to the right of...

[ubuntu] set default/preferred mode with xrandr?

Quick question: how do I tell xrandr to make an added mode the default/preferred? (such that it's selected when the system starts up)

p.s. I'm using xrandr because 11.10 seems to have ditched...

[ubuntu] Re: Video tearing in 11.10 :(

Forced 60.0hz and 59.94 refresh rates with xrandr. This resulted in a much faster / less noticeable bottom-to-top moving tear. I'm pretty sure now this is 100% a refresh rate issue; I just have no...

[ubuntu] Re: Video tearing in 11.10 :(

    Yes, mirroring laptop to TV.

I had trouble doing this at first, since the (1080p) external display didn't advertise (via HDMI) as supporting the laptops native 1600x900. I copied this mode to the...

[ubuntu] Re: Video tearing in 11.10 :(

Problem isn't TwinView since I'm mirroring. There's just a slow, crawling tear that goes up the external display and then starts at the bottom again when it's reached the top. I'm sure this means...

[ubuntu] Re: Video tearing in 11.10 :(

That would make sense: a slightly different refresh rate causing one of the screens (external in my case) to tear.

Do both monitors necessarily receive the same refresh rate when mirroring? I'd...

Just incase I'm not clear this pic shows the sort of thing I'm talking about. Line crawls up the screen slowly but continuously, only noticeable when things are moving a lot on screen. Does this...

[ubuntu] Re: Video tearing in 11.10 :(

Also getting a lot of tearing in 11.10 w/ HD Graphics over HDMI. Vsync is on in Compiz. I suspect this is the fault of the current shipping driver, very interested in what people running the edgers...

I haven't done anything to mess with compiz. Or Firefox for that matter. Although I'm wondering if there isn't a way to *FORCE* Unity on top using Compiz?

  18. [ubuntu] how to open ALL windows in same monitor?

[ubuntu] Re: Should I get a Mac?

Macs work great w/ Ubuntu, they just cost more money, so it's up to you whether you want to pay for the nicer build quality.
