Did you try installing the Nvidia X Server Settings package from the Synaptic Manager?

It is like a control panel for your video card.

Tried all the methods posted none worked. :(

Tried sudo in the terminal window - still didn't work.

I used the Synaptic Package Manager and installed the nvidia-glx-new package and the nvidia settings.
