  1. [xubuntu] Re: Disable log in after screen blanks out

In Xubuntu 20.04 this is controlled in Settings > Screensaver unless you have explicitly set up light-locker.
  2. Re: bash scripts and aliasing help please?

Usually $HOME/bin, which is usually /home/<you>/bin where <you> is your username.

Yes, then you would typically put it in /usr/local/bin .

That's a permissions question, not so much...
  3. Re: Fixing Glib errors in Audacity after 18.04 to 20.04 upgrade

Ok, downloaded Ubuntu 20.04.1 live CD and found it: Settings > Region & Language > Manage Installed Languages
  4. Re: Fixing Glib errors in Audacity after 18.04 to 20.04 upgrade

In Settings > Language Support, what do you have set for "Keyboard input method system"? I had to set this to none to get Audacity working in Xubuntu 20.04.

(I don't know where the "Keyboard...
  5. Re: Changed desktop icons after upgrade to 20.04.1

Can you please also post the output from running this command in Terminal? -

    ls -la ~/.local/share/applications
  6. Re: Changed desktop icons after upgrade to 20.04.1

    Try

    chmod +x ~/Desktop/lxterminal.desktop

Does the LXTerminal icon now work as you expect?
  7. Re: touchpad scrolling disabled; can not enable.

Same story with a USB touchpad plugged into a desktop computer.
  8. Re: Changed desktop icons after upgrade to 20.04.1

Please post the output from running the following command in Terminal -

    ls -la ~/Desktop
  9. [all variants] Re: how do I get a list of install applications that I installed myself?

No there is not. But you can write a script.

  11. Re: check for installed (objects?) via terminal

Yes. How do you intend to use this list?

Not all of them are applications. I call them "deb packages". Not all deb packages install an application.

    @yetimon_64, the simulation doesn't...
  12. [xubuntu] Re: A terminal appears after any lightdm session

In Settings > Session and Startup, do you have a "Saved Sessions" tab?
What do you have enabled under Application Autostart?

[lubuntu] Re: black box when opening menus

That's odd. So odd that I got curious enough to try to reproduce this myself in my Xubuntu 18.04. And I did.

    The fix:

    1) run this command in Terminal -

    QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME= lxqt-config
    ...

[lubuntu] Re: black box when opening menus

Great, now run this command to see what the bad value of QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME is -

    env | grep -F QT

Next step is to find out where QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME is being set -

    grep -r -F...

[lubuntu] Re: black box when opening menus

As a test, can you please try running Wireshark (because it's what you took screenshot of) from Terminal using this command? -

    QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME= wireshark
    Any difference?

[lubuntu] Re: black box when opening menus

How do you have Qt 5 appearance configured?

(Sounds like a similar problem to this thread.)
  18. [xubuntu] Re: Network icon does not resize when the Panel is resized

    That is the answer.
  19. Re: looking for equivalent tool in Ubuntu (currently leaving Windows)

For the "check" part, you might read this thread for some ideas.

Re: IceWM to Xfce - old habits die hard

Settings > Panel > Items, choose the panel in question and select the "Window Buttons". Click the gear to configure it. Set "Sorting order" to your liking.
  21. [xubuntu] Re: Resize windows only using mouse (for a user with handycap)

To be clear, I did not suggest ever switching away from Xfce. It's possible to use openbox under Xfce, that's what I'm doing right now and on multiple machines.

I think it's the theme. Try...
  22. [xubuntu] Re: Resize windows only using mouse (for a user with handycap)

I use Openbox window manager instead of xfwm4 and select an Openbox theme with thicker window borders.

Also, for what it's worth, last I checked in xfwm4 it might be easier to resize window from...
  23. Suggestions for a narrow-angle webcam?

We're seeking a USB webcam with the following features:
    - Narrow angle field of view (not more than 65 degrees total. Seems most USB webcams are 110 degrees.)
    - Not fish-eye
    - Capable of...

[ubuntu] Re: Running Zoom from terminal

Can you try Xubuntu 20.04 or, failing that, maybe Lubuntu 18.04? Both are still supported and thus would be much safer than connecting outdated 12.04 to the Internet.

Can you get more RAM? I...

Ubuntu 12.04 is EOL and has not been updated in more than three years. Can you use a current version of the OS?
