  1. [all variants] Re: Accessing Ubuntu desktop remotely, VNC too slow

OK, so... TeamViewer does work and it can transfer files, which is good, but it is still nowhere near as fast as RDP between two Windows machines. So I guess there's no comparable solution to this :(...
  2. [all variants] Re: ATI Rage driver frustration. What version/desktop/other distro should I use?

Sounds like a great deal of fun when I get hundreds of available updates after installation.

I've never done that before. Who and where would I report this to? The kernel bugtracker? X server bug...
  3. [all variants] Re: ATI Rage driver frustration. What version/desktop/other distro should I use?

    Why 12.04.1 and not 12.04.2? :?
And what will I do when 12.04 is no longer supported? :(
It does however seem that the older kernel works better. I tried Linux Mint Debian, which still uses 3.2.0...
  4. [all variants] Re: ATI Rage driver frustration. What version/desktop/other distro should I use?

I'd beg to differ. Ubuntu still supports i386 even though the last 32bit CPUs were sold 6-7 years ago and those were i686.
Also, server motherboards used Rage XL chips for basic display capability...
  5. [all variants] ATI Rage driver frustration. What version/desktop/other distro should I use?

Hello. I have an old computer with an ATI Rage series graphics card (I think it's Rage 128 with 16 MB memory, but does it really matter?). I want to use the machine primarily as a samba server, but...
  6. [all variants] Re: Accessing Ubuntu desktop remotely, VNC too slow

I wanted to try TeamViewer today, but I can no longer log onto the machine. Only through ssh, but not locally from the logon screen. I know, unrelated problem.
  7. [all variants] Accessing Ubuntu desktop remotely, VNC too slow

    Hello.
I want to access my Linux machine remotely from my Windows PC and run graphical applications on it. It's connected via Wi-Fi 802.11g and file transfers to and from Samba run at around 2–2,5...

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

AMD officially supports openSUSE, so as a last-ditch effort, I installed openSUSE 12.1 on the machine. Still doesn't work, same amdconfig error.

Lessons learned: Open source drivers suck, AMD...

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

It doesn't work before the reboot.

    amdconfig: No supported adapters detected
By the way. the AMD website clearly states that the drivers (13.1, released this month) are for "kernel up to 3.4",...

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

I added the debian experimental repository to my apt sources, but if I do

    sudo apt-get install fglrx-legacy-driver
    no package is found :(

I guess I could try that. How do I install it?

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

If I'm using the right driver, why does a screensaver, which is simple 2D graphics, run at ~10 fps or less with 100% CPU load? I mean, I know this PC is ancient, but what if you had a low clocked AMD...

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

In my opinion a proper driver is "radeon" for ATI, "nouveau" for nVidia, "openchrome" for VIA/S3 and so on :) Gallium just runs on everything, it's like a stand-in or something.
    I have an even older...

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

Yes, the card is for AGP. Whoever built the system (the computer is not mine) made some unorthodox choices - setup is as follows:
    - Celeron D 2,4 GHz (Prescott-256K, sc478)
    - Gigabyte GA-8IK1100...

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

So I should install fglrx even though my card is a legacy model?

That's exactly what I did. Like I said in the first post, I was following these instructions:...

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

I probably need the radeonhd driver, but it's not in standard repositories and it fails to install from a .deb package. There's an error, but no sensible description. This is just great. No, wait,...

[ubuntu] Re: Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

You mean the Gallium driver? Its performance is very unsatisfactory, scrolling on websites is very painful. At least I think this is a VGA driver issue.

[ubuntu] Sloppy graphics with fglrx installed

    Hi,
I have a setup with a Radeon HD 3450 graphics card. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04.
On default, the graphics driver was reported as Gallium 0.4. I wanted to install AMD drivers. I followed this...

  21. [all variants] VIA UniChrome drivers – getting 2D acc./Flash to work

Hi. I've got an old PC here and I decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 on it, but I can't get the graphics to work properly. The motherboard is an Asus A7V8X-MX with VIA KM400 / VT8235 chipset (yes, that...
