  1. [ubuntu] Re: Is the filetype-to-app mapping situation in ubuntu the mess it seems to be?

    Any thoughts?
  2. Re: How can I get a program/feature if I am not a programmer?

I haven't tried, not having been able to offer enough not to be an insult. You could have a look around https://www.bountysource.com/. Perhaps see if there are people there you could contact. (Not an...
  3. Re: How can I get a program/feature if I am not a programmer?

If you're well-off, pay someone, or offer a bounty.

If not, you're (like me) an good argument for microbounties. But then to set up a good microbounty system you'd need a programmer ...

    Another...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Is the filetype-to-app mapping situation in ubuntu the mess it seems to be?

A bit more research, and the situation gets even more confusing. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdg-utils/+bug/209714

gnome-open not only doesn't work correctly, it's not maintained...
  5. [ubuntu] Is the filetype-to-app mapping situation in ubuntu the mess it seems to be?

I'd be the first to admit lack of detailed knowledge, so happily welcome corrections or enlightenment, but isn't the situation regarding default applications for different filetypes on ubuntu/gnome a...
  6. [all variants] Re: How to tell what process is writing / reading IO

I had similar needs recently and found iotop: http://guichaz.free.fr/iotop/

It doesn't need installing if you only have a one-off use for it. Just unpack and run iotop.py in the top-level dir.

[ubuntu] [SOLVED] Re: firefox-2 error in hardy

Well, randomly fixed rather than exactly solved.

I turned off compiz, ran FF2, which was OK. Then I turned compiz back on whilst FF2 was running, and to my surprise the latter kept going. Now the...

[ubuntu] Re: firefox-2 error in hardy .. compiz?

Here's another clue: if I turn compiz off, FF2 works.

I'd rather keep compiz on, of couse. Anyone know of any incompatabilities between compiz and FF2?

[ubuntu] Re: firefox-2 error in hardy

That's odd. I've un- and re-installed the FF2 package a couple of times. I've also used the FF2 tgz straight from mozilla's site. All cause the above problem for me. An interaction with another app,...

[ubuntu] Re: firefox-2 error in hardy

Ah, but I don't want to remove FF3, which I do use most of the time. I just want FF2 for some specific things (like offline use with google docs).

[ubuntu] Re: firefox-2 error in hardy

As my Hardy installation is pretty stock, I assume this must be a bug with the firefox-2 package.

Does anyone know where I should report this?

    [ubuntu] firefox-2 error in hardy

I want to use firefox-2 sometimes, as there's no google gears for ff3 yet. But when I run it (either the hardy package or the tgz downloaded from mozilla), I get the error:

    The program...
  14. [all variants] Re: Hardy + Thinkpad X40 + hdaps, anyone succeeded?

OK, thanks. That's a start. Perhaps it's worth giving it a try then.
  15. [all variants] Re: Hardy + Thinkpad X40 + hdaps, anyone succeeded?

Interesting -- I've also asked this on thinkpads.com forums, and it seems that likewise there no-one's had hdaps working on an X40. It's probably fair to assume then that it doesn't work.
  16. [all variants] Hardy + Thinkpad X40 + hdaps, anyone succeeded?

If anyone has got hdaps working on an X40 running hardy, could you ping a reply in here? Briefly outlining the steps would be even better, but mainly I just want to know if its possible before...

[all variants] Re: Slow Boot - "Loading Hardware Drivers"

I'm not an expert, but it seems to me that if your boot really is stopping or slowing on "Loading Hardware Drivers", then yours must be a different issue, so it wouldn't be worth trying this fix.

[all variants] Re: Slow Boot - "Loading Hardware Drivers"

My machine (using Hardy) is also booting very slowly. The odd thing is that this has only recently started (not sure exactly when because I don't reboot that often).

    The appearance of the boot...
  20. [xubuntu] Re: How to discover which app is causing excessive disk i/o

Why don't you try grabbing iotop (find link in post above) and leaving it running in a terminal? When the drive starts spinning, iotop might show you what's doing it.
  21. [xubuntu] Re: How to discover which app is causing excessive disk i/o

Well, it's been a bit of a puzzle. When the hard drive spins and everything stalls, iotop shows little or no I/O happening. So probably not the fault of a particular application or xubuntu itself.

  22. [xubuntu] Re: How to discover which app is causing excessive disk i/o

    Nice, thank you.

Following up on your lead, I found iotop.py here. It runs without kernel modification on 8.04 with its default 2.6.24-16 kernel.

It's even quite fun to watch the disk IO of...

  24. [xubuntu] How to discover which app is causing excessive disk i/o

Is there a tool which can monitor or otherwise show me what's doing lots of HD i/o at a given time?

I ask because on my newly-installed Xubuntu hardy, I get intermittent periods of a minute or two...
