    I can confirm this.
    Does not even turn off the screen (faint glow stays) when try to suspend/hibernate. Have to cold boot.

    Battery life is a pain. Win7 gets me...

    Remove all instances of matlab install.
    Try reinstalling Sun java. It seems some problem with jvm.

    Here is a guide on matlab student on linux.

    Use the mount command correctly to install.

    I do not see any compelling reason to use 64b applications. I use a PAE kernel to access the ram above 4gb.

    octave + gnuplot..if you are using basic matlab functions, there is almost complete compatibility between octave and matlab. you can just run .m files.
