I think this is a Pidgin issue as I can't add MSN contacts with Pidgin in Ubuntu 10.10 or in Windows.

I should have replied when I resolved this - maybe I was too embarrassed. The problem was that my mouse was busted.
I found the problem. It was a bad disk. For some reason, hdparm and fdisk didn't find any issues but if I remove it from the picture everything is ok.
sda1 = 51%
